Amara Keeps Score
Amara loved to win. When her family went to the mini-golf course for her little brother Kofi's seventh birthday, she grabbed the scorecard and the tiny pencil. "I'll keep score," she said. In mini-golf, the player who takes the fewest swings wins, and Amara planned to win by a lot.
On the first few holes, Amara counted every swing out loud. "Two for me, five for Kofi," she announced at hole three. "Three for me, six for Kofi," she said at hole five. Kofi's smile got smaller and smaller. By hole eight, he was dragging his golf club along the ground.
Hole nine had a tall wooden windmill with slow, creaky blades. Kofi tapped his ball, and a blade knocked it right back to his feet. He tried again. Bonk! The blade knocked it back a second time. Kofi's lip shook. "This is my worst birthday ever," he whispered.
Amara looked down at the scorecard. She had wanted to win, but now winning did not seem important. She folded the scorecard and tucked it into her back pocket. "New rule," she said. "On this hole, you get a point every time the windmill bonks your ball!"
Kofi giggled and swung again. Bonk! "One point!" Amara cheered. Soon the whole family was trying to hit the blades on purpose, and everyone was laughing. At the last hole, Kofi tugged on Amara's sleeve. "Can we play your windmill game again next year?" he asked. Amara smiled. She never did add up the scores.
