Juniper Climbs Down
Juniper was a young nuthatch who lived in a tall pine at the edge of a snowy forest. Like all nuthatches, she hopped down tree trunks headfirst. But Juniper wished she could climb like Flint, the young woodpecker next door. Flint always hopped up the trunk with his stiff tail pressed against the bark.
"Watch me climb the right way," Juniper told Flint one cold morning. She turned around and tried to hop up the trunk with her short tail pressed against the bark. Her feet slipped, and she tumbled into a snowbank. Flint laughed. Juniper ducked her head and flew to the other side of the tree, where no one could see her.
That afternoon, a hard wind shook the forest. Snow covered every branch and buried the seeds on the ground. Flint pecked at the frozen bark, but he could not find a single bug. "I am so hungry," he said in a small voice.
Juniper remembered something. In the fall, she had tucked sunflower seeds into cracks in the pine's bark. Many of the cracks faced down, where the snow could not reach. Only a bird climbing down headfirst could see into them. Juniper zipped down the trunk headfirst, peeking under every ridge of bark. One by one, she pulled out seeds and carried them to Flint.
Flint ate until his belly was full. "How did you find these?" he asked. "I climbed the nuthatch way," Juniper said with a proud smile. From that day on, she was happy to climb headfirst.
