The Tiger Puzzle
Characters: TEO; LILA, his cousin; ABUELA, their grandmother
Scene 1. A rainy afternoon at Abuela's apartment. A big tiger puzzle is almost finished on the table.
ABUELA: Look! Only four pieces are left. We have worked on this puzzle all week.
TEO: Can I put in the last piece? I want everyone to know that I finished it.
LILA: But we all worked on it together, Teo.
Abuela and Lila go to the kitchen to make cocoa. Teo snaps in three pieces. Then he slips the last piece into his pocket.
TEO: (whispering) Now nobody can finish it before me.
Scene 2. A few minutes later. Abuela and Lila come back with three mugs of cocoa.
LILA: Wait! There is a hole in the tiger's face. One piece is missing!
ABUELA: (frowning) Oh no. Grandpa gave me this puzzle for my birthday. I hoped we could finish it today.
Lila crawls under the table and peeks behind the chair legs. Abuela lifts every couch cushion and checks underneath. Teo's cheeks turn red, and he stares down at his socks.
TEO: (quietly) Abuela, I have the piece. I hid it in my pocket because I wanted to be the one who finished. I'm sorry.
ABUELA: Thank you for telling the truth, Teo. That took courage.
TEO: (holding out the piece) Lila, will you put it in with me?
Teo and Lila press the last piece into place together. Abuela claps, and the tiger's face is finally whole.
