About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students define a corn-cleaning problem that magnetic attraction could help solve.
- Students identify measurable goals and limits for a magnetic cleaning tool.
- Students use material tests and collection results to evaluate possible designs.
How to use
Read the farm investigation together, then have students use the graph to evaluate the designs. Finish with an independent design-problem statement. No hands-on materials are required.

A Magnetic Cleaner for Farm Corn
Use a class investigation to define a problem magnets could solve.

What Needs to Change?
Read about the farm demonstration. Use the observations to identify the problem, goals, and limits.
Cleaning Corn at the Farm
At a corn farm, a class explores how to remove loose metal parts from harvested corn. An adult makes a model problem by mixing eight large steel washers among dry corn kernels in a shallow plastic tray. These materials are only for the demonstration, not for eating.
First, the class tries a brush. In twenty seconds, it pushes six washers out of the tray, but many kernels leave the tray too. The farm team wants a tool that removes all eight washers within twenty seconds while leaving every kernel in the tray.
The team must keep the same tray. It may use only one large magnet, which must stay inside a firmly closed cover. No motors are allowed. An adult handles the washers and secures the magnet inside its cover.
Before designing, the adult holds the same covered magnet the same short distance from three samples, one at a time. The steel washer moves toward it. A brass washer and a corn kernel do not move. Repeated tests give the same results.
- A. Move the kernels out while leaving the washers in the tray.
- B. Move the washers and kernels out together as quickly as possible.
- C. Remove the washers quickly while keeping the kernels in the tray.
- D. Spread the washers and kernels evenly across a larger tray.
All eight washers are removed. The original tray is used.Every corn kernel stays in the tray. The work takes no more than twenty seconds.Only one magnet is used.
