Read the play

The Diorama Due Friday

Characters: Maya, Theo, Ms. Rivera (their teacher)

Scene 1 (Ms. Rivera's classroom on Monday)

MS. RIVERA: Each pair will build a diorama in a shoebox. It must show the home of an animal. Your dioramas are due on Friday.

MAYA: Theo, let's show a beaver pond! We can build the dam out of real sticks.

THEO: Good idea. I will bring a shoebox and blue paint. You bring the sticks.

Scene 2 (Maya's kitchen on Wednesday)

(Maya glues sticks into the box. Theo paints the water.)

THEO: Oh no! I knocked over the paint. Now the sticks are all blue.

MAYA: (sighing) The dam looks like part of the water. Nobody will even see it.

THEO: (thinking) Wait. Real beavers pack mud onto their dams. We have brown clay left over from art class. We can press it over the sticks like mud.

MAYA: (smiling) Let's try it before the paint dries.

Scene 3 (Ms. Rivera's classroom on Friday)

(The class crowds around the beaver pond.)

MS. RIVERA: Your dam looks so real! How did you make it?

THEO: It started as a mistake.

MAYA: The blue paint spilled, so we covered the sticks with clay. Now the dam is our favorite part.

MS. RIVERA: Sometimes a mistake can lead to your best idea.
