Imani and the Crooked Line
In the town of Sela Bend, a weaver named Imani made blankets for the Saturday market. Everyone said her rows were the straightest and neatest in the valley, and Imani was proud of that. She wove slowly and checked each row with her finger.
One Friday evening, a hungry goat bumped Imani's elbow. Her thread jumped and left a long, crooked line of gold across the red blanket. "This blanket is ruined," she groaned. She reached for her scissors to cut out the whole row.
"Wait," said her grandmother, who was shelling beans nearby. "Look at it again before you cut." Imani looked. The crooked line wiggled across the blanket like a winding road. Slowly, she smiled. She wove green hills on both sides of the road and tiny houses along the edge.
On Saturday, travelers stopped at Imani's table. They passed by the straight blankets and picked up the red one with the winding road. "No other blanket is like this one," said an old trader. "I can almost walk down that road." He paid more for it than for any blanket Imani had ever sold.
That night, Imani told her grandmother, "I almost cut away the best part." Her grandmother nodded. "Now you know," she said. Imani put her scissors away and started a new blanket. This time, she wove a crooked line on purpose.
