The Squeak in the Bike Shop

Every Saturday, nine-year-old Wen helped her Uncle Dario at his bike repair shop. Her job was to sweep the floor and hand him tools. The shop smelled like oil and rubber, and a big wooden clock ticked above the door.

One morning, Mrs. Alvarez wheeled in her blue bicycle. "It squeaks every time I ride it," she said. "The noise started on Monday." Uncle Dario spun the wheels, tightened the seat, and put oil on the chain. But when Mrs. Alvarez rode a lap around the shop, the squeak came back.

Wen listened carefully. She noticed that the squeak came only when the right pedal went down. "Uncle Dario, it is not the chain or the wheels," she said. "It is coming from the pedal." Uncle Dario lifted the bicycle and gave the right pedal a turn. Sure enough, he heard a tiny squeak.

He took the pedal off and looked inside. A small, round pebble was stuck near the screw! Uncle Dario picked it out with tweezers. Then he put the pedal back on and added one drop of oil.

Mrs. Alvarez rode another lap around the shop. This time, the only sound was the clock ticking. "My bicycle is quiet now," she said with a big smile. Uncle Dario winked at Wen. "Next week, you can hold the tweezers," he said.
