About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students find the area of a rectangle by counting the unit squares that tile it.
  • Students show that multiplying the side lengths gives the same area as counting the tiles.

How to use

Use after students have counted unit squares to find area. Have them count the first rug row by row, then multiply to check, before moving on to rugs without grid lines.

Reading Corner Carpet Squares: Tile and Multiply

Cover rugs with carpet squares, then check the area by multiplying the side lengths.

Part 1: Lay the carpet squares

The class is fixing up the reading corner. Each carpet square is 1 foot long and 1 foot wide, so it covers 1 square foot. The squares fit with no gaps and no overlaps.

1.
Mr. Diaz covers a rug spot with carpet squares.5 ft3 ft

Add the carpet squares row by row: 5 + 5 + 5 =   carpet squares
Multiply the side lengths: 3 × 5 =   square feet

2.
Match each tiled rug to the multiplication fact that tells how many carpet squares cover it. One fact is not used.
  1. A. 4 × 4 = 16
  2. B. 3 × 7 = 21
  3. C. 2 × 7 = 14
  4. D. 2 × 6 = 12
3.
Circle every rug that is covered by exactly 24 carpet squares.
