Oak Lantern School Resource Stewards

Read about the schoolyard

Read the passage. Then answer the questions using details from the passage.

A New Corner at Oak Lantern School

Oak Lantern School had an unused corner beside the playground. The corner was covered with cracked asphalt, so rain could not easily soak into the ground. The school team removed part of the asphalt and loosened the soil. They planted native flowers and small bushes there. Their roots help hold soil in place, and the plants give insects a place to find food.

The team spread fallen leaves and wood chips over the bare soil. This mulch helps the ground stay moist and keeps rain from washing soil away. Students also placed a compost bin near the cafeteria. Food scraps can break down in the bin and become compost for the plants instead of going into the trash.

People changed the school environment when they removed asphalt, planted living things, and built a compost area. They also made choices to protect natural resources. Students used refillable water bottles, saved clean paper for art, and packed lunches in reusable containers. The school recorded how many bags of trash these four actions kept out of the trash pickup in one month.
