About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare model designs that slow wind from changing land.
  • Students compare model designs that slow water from changing land.
  • Students use test evidence to judge and improve a land-protection design.

How to use

Read the test description together, then study each graph before students answer. Ask students to explain why a smaller number shows less land-shape change.

Covers for the Recycling Center Berm

Use model test results to protect land from wind and water.

Study the model tests

The recycling center plans a soil berm beside its sorting yard. A class tested three ways to protect a model berm. They also tested a bare berm for comparison. The class measured how many centimeters the edge of each berm changed. A smaller number means the berm kept more of its shape.

The Berm Test

The class made four matching trays with the same amount of damp soil and the same slope. One tray had bare soil. The other trays had strips of reused cardboard, a ring of small gravel, or fabric held down with short stakes. The class used a fan for one minute to model wind. Then the class made new matching trays and poured two cups of water down each slope to model flowing water.

The students measured the land-edge change after each test. During the water test, the cardboard curled up at its lower edge. The gravel stayed in place. The staked fabric stayed flat, but water moved around some of its edges.
