About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare model results to describe how wind and water change land.
  • Students use test evidence to choose designs that slow soil movement.
  • Students identify fair comparisons and plan a follow-up land-protection test.

How to use

Read the fire-station model story and graphs together. Ask students to explain why smaller amounts of soil movement show better protection before they answer.

The Open House Slope Test

Compare designs that help keep soil in place during wind and water tests.

Read the model test

The fire station is planning an open house. Firefighters want to protect a small soil slope beside the visitor path. The class built matching slope models and tested four designs.Use the two graphs to answer the questions. A smaller number means less of the slope changed shape.

A Slope Beside the Visitor Path

The class made four trays with the same amount of damp soil and shaped each soil slope the same way. One tray stayed bare. The other trays used a low stone border, a woven ground mat, or a short slat fence. For the wind test, a fan blew toward each tray. For the water test, the class poured the same amount of water down each slope.

After each test, students measured how many centimeters of the slope edge had changed shape. They used the same fan setting, the same amount of water, and the same test time. During the water test, some water went around the ends of the short slat fence. The class recorded the results before deciding which design to use at the open house.
