About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare how designs slow wind and water from moving sand.
  • Students use observations and measurements to choose a land-protection design.
  • Students describe a fair model test and suggest a design improvement.

How to use

Read the station test notes aloud and discuss what a smaller amount of moved sand means. Then have students use the picture cards and observations to answer independently.

Sand Shields at Desert Station

Compare ways to help wind and water leave less sand behind.

Look at the station tests

The Desert Star Research Station has a sandy path near its radio tower. The team tested four ways to help keep the path's shape. Look at the picture cards and read the test notes.

The Sandy Path Tests

The team made four matching trays with the same amount of sand. One tray was left bare. One had a row of pebbles. One had a woven mat pressed over the sand. One had a line of dry brush. For the wind test, a fan blew toward each tray. For the water test, the team poured the same amount of water down each tray.

After each test, the team measured the sand that moved away. In the wind test, bare sand lost 10 scoops, pebbles lost 5 scoops, the woven mat lost 3 scoops, and dry brush lost 4 scoops. In the water test, bare sand lost 9 scoops, pebbles lost 3 scoops, the woven mat lost 6 scoops, and dry brush lost 2 scoops. A smaller number means less sand moved.
