Use the rest of the sentence to find what new words mean.

Read the story

Read the story about Nadia and her grandpa. When you get to a word in bold, look for clues in the words around it.

Nadia's Patchwork Quilt

1Nadia's old blanket was tattered. It had holes in the corners, and loose threads hung from every side. "It is time for a new one," said Grandpa Kwame. "Let's make a quilt together."

2Grandpa opened a box of fabric scraps, the small pieces of cloth left over from his other sewing jobs. Some scraps were plain brown or gray. Others were vivid, with colors so bright they almost seemed to glow. Nadia picked the brightest ones she could find.

3First, they cut the scraps into squares. Nadia's squares came out lopsided. One side of each square was longer than the other. Grandpa smiled. "A quilt does not have to be perfect," he said.

4Grandpa sewed the squares together into one big quilt. It was too wide for one person to fold. "Can you lend a hand?" he asked. Nadia held one end, Grandpa held the other, and together they folded it.

5That night, Nadia curled up under her new quilt. She felt snug, warm and cozy from her toes to her nose.
