Kiwi the Parakeet Gets Loose

Our class parakeet is named Kiwi. One morning, Mr. Bellamy opened her cage to give her fresh seeds. Before he could shut the door, Kiwi zipped out. She fluttered across the room, flapping her small green wings.

Kiwi perched on top of the tall bookcase. She sat there, high above us, and would not come down. Then a loud bell rang. The startled bird jumped into the air, so surprised that she dropped a feather.

Ines had an idea. She held up a spoon of millet, the seed treat that Kiwi loves best. "Come on, Kiwi," she said in a soft, gentle voice. She coaxed and coaxed, and slowly Kiwi hopped closer.

At last Kiwi swooped down from the bookcase and landed on Ines's finger. The class cheered quietly. Mr. Bellamy carried Kiwi to her cage and fastened the latch, closing it tight so it could not pop open.

That afternoon, Kiwi was content. She chirped happy songs, calm and pleased. Her cage felt snug, as warm and cozy as a nest.
