The Library Book Sale Plan

On Saturday, Maple Street Public Library held a used-book sale. The Friends of the Library group used some sale money to pay helpers. Helpers earned $2 for each hour they worked. Nora and Eli each worked for two hours. They carried light boxes and placed price stickers on books.

Nora earned $4. She wanted a mystery book that cost $1, so she spent $1 on the book. With help from her parent, Nora put the other $3 into a savings account at a bank. The bank made a record of her deposit. Nora kept her account information and PIN private.

Eli also earned $4. He kept the money in his wallet. At the sale, he bought a puzzle book for $4. He had no money left to save. Nora and Eli compared their choices. Nora spent some money and saved some for later. Eli spent his money on one book.

Nora's plan gave her money in the bank for a later goal. Eli's plan gave him a book right away. Both friends learned that people can make different choices with money they earn.
