Helpers at Kelp Cove
On Saturday, Kelp Cove Island Nature Center held a shoreline discovery day. Four children joined a supervised helper program. They earned money for jobs. Leilani counted visitor wristbands, Mateo washed reusable cups, Nia placed labels on display cards, and Owen returned chairs. An adult paid each helper after the work was finished. The graph shows how much each helper earned.
The children made different plans. Leilani planned to spend $2 on a postcard and save $4. Mateo wanted to save all $4 for a later goal. Nia planned to spend $3 on lunch and save $5. She would ask a trusted adult to deposit the $5 in her bank account. Owen planned to spend $2 on a snack and save $3.
Earning means getting money for work. Spending means using money to pay for something now. Saving means setting money aside for later. A bank account can help keep saved money safe. It is also important to keep account information private and ask a trusted adult for help.
- A. Most helpers should spend every dollar at the center.
- B. A bank account is a way to earn money for work.
- C. People can earn, spend, save, and keep savings safe in a bank.
- D. Saving means using money to buy something right away.
