The Camping Class Investigates

During a camping trip, Imani's class visits Lava Flat Camp. The campground is on old, cool volcanic rock. A ranger gives the class sample study records about changing volcanic land. The class stays in the safe camping area.

Step 1: Ask, "Do these land changes take about the same amount of time?" Step 2: Read the dated pictures, timed videos, and study notes. Step 3: Compare picture pairs with different time gaps. Within each pair, keep the place, view, and picture size the same. Step 4: Record the time clues and the land changes.

Crack card: During an earthquake, a crack opened in the ground. A video recorded the change from start to finish in 20 seconds.

Lava card: Hot, flowing rock spread over a patch of ground in 7 hours.

Rock card: Pictures taken 80 years apart showed that rain had loosened small grains from a rough rock surface.

Stream card: A study estimated that a stream took about 600 years to wear a deep groove into rock.

1.
Which recorded change took the shortest time?
  • A. The lava spreading over the ground
  • B. The crack opening during the earthquake
