  • Students use time records to explain a cause-and-effect chain in Earth's surface.
  • Students support a claim about Earth events with observations and time evidence.

Rain on the Kitchen Patio

Follow a cause-and-effect chain to compare quick and slow Earth changes.

Read the kitchen patio records

The school kitchen has a small herb patio outside its back door. Read the numbered records. Think about what changed, what happened next, and how long each change took.

Records from the Herb Patio

11. During a heavy rain, water poured from the kitchen roof spout onto a bare patch of soil. The water carried loose soil about 1 meter toward the drain. The rain lasted 12 minutes. After the rain stopped, the class saw a muddy pile beside the drain.

22. During a storm, a small part of the soft soil bank slid onto the patio path over about 2 hours. The class measured the new soil pile before sweeping the path.

33. A stone border beside the herb bed had a crack that was 1 millimeter wide in 2018. In 2024, after several wet and cold seasons, the crack was 4 millimeters wide. A small chip had broken from the border.

44. The edge of a sandstone step looked nearly the same from one week to the next. After 10 years of rain and wind carrying tiny bits of grit, the edge was 2 millimeters more rounded.

1.

How many minutes did the rain last in Record 1?   minutes.

2.
Which recorded change took the shortest time?
  • A. The crack in the stone border widened.
