Gertie the Goose Comes to Recess

One spring morning, a big gray goose waddled onto the school field. The kids at recess named her Gertie. "Look at that goose," Pema whispered to Hollis.

At first, Gertie only nibbled a few blades of grass. Then she found a dropped cracker and gobbled it up in one big gulp.

Hollis tossed a ball gently to Pema, but it bounced near Gertie. The goose flapped her wings and honked. Then she charged at the ball, running fast with her neck stretched out!

Pema giggled behind her hand. Mr. Ostrowski, the recess teacher, smiled. "She is not furious," he said. "She is just curious."

When the bell rang, everyone strolled back inside. From the window, the class watched Gertie march off across the field, as proud as a queen.
