An Inventor Who Noticed Problems

Garrett Morgan was a Black American inventor who lived in Cleveland, Ohio. He noticed that people faced dangers as cities grew. In 1914, he received a patent for a safety hood. The hood could help a person breathe in smoke or gas. In 1916, Morgan and others used it to help rescue workers trapped by smoke in a tunnel near Cleveland.

Morgan also watched traffic on busy streets. Drivers needed time to change from moving to stopping. In 1923, he received a patent for an improved traffic signal with a warning position between stop and go. This gave drivers a moment to slow down.

Morgan's tools were from his time, or then. Today, many traffic signals use red, yellow, and green. Yellow gives a warning before red. Modern breathing gear uses newer materials and technology, but it still helps workers in smoky places. Morgan's tools did not look exactly like today's tools.
