County Fair Community Clues

Compare three kinds of communities.

Read and study

Read about three communities near a county fair. Then study the graph.

Three Communities Near the Fair

Oakview City is an urban community. Many people live close together in tall apartment buildings and row houses. Jobs include working in stores, hospitals, and offices. City buses and a train carry people. Much of the land has buildings, streets, and sidewalks. Parks add open space.

Sunrise Hills is a suburban community outside Oakview City. It has mostly one-family homes with yards. People work at schools, stores, and offices. Most people travel by car, although some use buses. Land is used for neighborhoods, shopping centers, and open spaces.

Prairie Hollow is rural. Its homes are far apart, and many people live near farms, pastures, or woods. Jobs include growing crops and caring for animals. People often use cars or pickup trucks because jobs and homes are spread out and there are few bus routes. Large areas of land are used for fields and pasture.

On Saturday, a teacher counted family groups arriving at the county fair by bus. The count is shown in the graph.
