A New Start for the Bellini Family
Families have come to the United States from many places and for different reasons. Some hoped to join relatives. Some looked for work or a safer place to live. Their journeys often had several steps.
In 1907, Antonio Bellini left a village in southern Italy and settled in Newark, New Jersey. In a letter in 1908, he told his sister Rosa and her husband, Matteo, that he had found factory work and could help them get started. Rosa and Matteo hoped to join Antonio and earn money. Their children, Lucia and Paolo, traveled with them.
In spring 1909, the family packed clothes and a few tools. They sold some furniture to help pay for tickets. They rode a train to Naples, a port city, and boarded a steamship. After many days at sea, they reached New York Harbor. Officials at Ellis Island asked questions and checked travelers before they could enter. The family then took another train to Newark. In 1910, Matteo began work at a factory.
