About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students use test results to explain that light must shine on an object for it to be seen.
- Students distinguish an object seen by light shining on it from an object giving off its own light.
- Students predict whether objects will be seen when lighting conditions change.
How to use
Read the investigation and results aloud. Let students refer to the results as they answer, then discuss the two ways an object can be seen.

Test a Ball
Listen to the investigation. Use the results to answer.
A Small Tunnel Test
At the playground's crawl-tunnel area, a class tests a small model tunnel. No one climbs inside it. An adult covers its ends. A covered viewer keeps outside light out while students look inside.
1. Put a toy ball inside. Look with the flashlight off. 2. Keep the ball in place. Shine the flashlight on it. Look again. 3. Replace the ball with a battery tap light. Turn both lights off. Look. 4. Leave the flashlight off. Turn the tap light on. Look again.
Keep the tunnel, viewer, and object spot the same. Record whether each object can be seen.
Test 1: No light reaches the ball. The ball is not seen.
Test 2: The flashlight shines on the ball. The ball is seen.
Test 3: The flashlight and tap light are off. The tap light is not seen.
Test 4: The flashlight is off. The tap light is on. The tap light is seen.
- A. The ball moved closer to the viewer.
- B. Light began shining on the ball.
- C. The class used a larger ball.
- D. The adult opened the tunnel ends.
