The Pelican's Pouch

1A pelican is a big bird that lives near water. Under its long bill is a pouch made of stretchy skin. The pouch works like a fishing net.

2A brown pelican flies over the sea to look for fish. When it spots one, it folds its wings and dives into the water with a splash. It scoops up the fish and lots of water in its pouch.

3Next, the pelican tips its bill down so the water drains out. Then it swallows the fish whole.

4White pelicans catch fish in a different way. They do not dive. They often swim in a group and dip their bills into the water to scoop up fish.
