Read the purpose. Keep it in mind as you read the story. The numbers show the paragraphs.

Purpose: Read to find out what Leo makes and what happens to it.

The Painted Rock

1Leo found a smooth, flat rock by the creek. He took it home and washed off the mud.

2Then he got out his paints. He painted the rock bright blue. On top, he painted a yellow sun with a big smile. On the back, he wrote, "Have a sunny day!"

3The next morning, Leo and his dad walked on the creek path. Leo set the rock next to a big tree, where people would see it.

4That afternoon, Leo went back to look. His rock was gone! In its place sat a green rock with a painted frog on it. On the back, it said, "Thank you!"
