About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students compare how gentle and stronger pushes and pulls change how far an object moves.
  • Students predict how changing the direction of a push or pull changes an object's motion.
  • Students identify what to keep the same when testing pushes and pulls.

How to use

Read the observations and questions aloud. Let children point to their choices. If repeating the tests, use an empty boot on a flat board on the ground, away from trail traffic.

Picture of a boot

A Trail Stop Test

At a mountain trail rest stop, Nia tests an empty boot on a flat board. An adult ties a short rope to the boot. Nia uses the same boot, board, and start line each time. For each test, she gives one push or one pull, then lets go. She watches where the boot stops. She puts the boot back at the start before the next test. The board stays flat.

Picture of a flag Two flags mark stopping places. The near flag is closer to the start. The far flag is farther from the start.
Push observations
Gentle push: The boot stopped at the near flag.
Stronger push: The boot stopped at the far flag.
Both pushes sent the boot the same way.
