About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students experimentally compare angle measures before and after translations, reflections, and rotations.
  • Students use corresponding angles and test evidence to evaluate robot-part designs.

How to use

Provide tracing paper, a ruler, and a protractor. Have students complete the physical tests before using angle preservation to evaluate the robot's design records.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.G.A.1.b

Check by experiment that rotations, reflections, and translations move angles to angles with the same measure.

Robotics Club: Sensor Opening Tests

Test whether moving a robot-part outline changes its angles.

Bench Tests

The robotics club is testing flat outlines of robot parts. Use tracing paper and a protractor. Move the entire tracing without bending or stretching it. Measure the smaller opening between the rays.

1.
The rays represent the edges of a distance sensor's detection region. Measure the opening. Trace both rays and their vertex, then slide the tracing 4 cm to the right without turning it. Measure the moved opening.

Original opening:  °. Translated opening:  °.

2.
This angle marks a corner in the robot's side guard. Trace it. Reflect the tracing across the horizontal line through its vertex by flipping the paper top to bottom. Measure both openings.

Original corner:  °. Reflected corner:  °.

3.
This opening belongs to a camera mount. Trace it, mark a pivot point outside the angle, and rotate the entire tracing one half-turn about that point. Use a protractor to compare the original and turned openings.

Original opening:  °. Rotated opening:  °.
