About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students experimentally compare angle measures before and after rigid transformations.
  • Students use angle preservation to evaluate translated, reflected, and rotated bakery templates.
  • Students distinguish changes in batch quantities from changes in template angle measures.

How to use

Provide a protractor and tracing paper. Have students perform the tracing experiments before applying their findings to the bakery's larger school-event order.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

Check by experiment that rotations, reflections, and translations move angles to angles with the same measure.

Bakery Batch Plans: Angle Lab

Test the angles on templates used for a school-event baking order.

Test the Templates

A bakery is increasing recipe quantities for a school event. Staff slide, turn, and flip paper templates to plan tray layouts. Use tracing paper and a protractor. Measure the smaller opening unless told otherwise.

1.
Trace this corner of a pastry template. Rotate the entire tracing 90° clockwise about its vertex. Draw the rotated angle in the space below. Keep both rays and mark the vertex.
2.
Measure the original corner in question 1. Then measure your rotated tracing to check whether the opening changed.

Original angle:  °. Rotated angle:  °.

3.
The bakery slides this stencil corner to another tray without turning it. Trace the corner and compare your tracing with the choices. Which diagram could be its translated image?
  • A.
  • B.
  • C.
  • D.
