About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students find rates of change and initial values from words, two points, tables, and graphs.
  • Students write linear functions and interpret their coefficients in 3D-printing situations.
  • Students use linear models to predict quantities and explain modeling errors.

How to use

Use after introducing y = mx + b. Have students show slope calculations on scratch paper, then discuss how setup amounts differ from per-item rates.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

8.F.B.4

Write a function for a linear relationship, finding its rate of change and initial value from words, two points, a table, or a graph.

3D-Printing Club: Linear Blueprints

Build linear functions from descriptions, tables, points, and graphs.

Build the Model

Assume each relationship is linear over the stated range. Identify the rate of change and the value when the input is 0.

1.
The club prints identical model towers. A support base uses 14 grams of filament, and each tower adds 9 grams. Let x be the number of towers and y be the total filament used.

Rate of change:   grams per tower. Initial value:   grams.

2.
A spool has 360 grams of filament before printing begins. Each model gear uses 12 grams. Which function gives the grams remaining, y, after x gears are printed?
  • A. y = −12x + 360
  • B. y = 360x − 12
  • C. y = 12x + 360
  • D. y = −360x + 12
3.
The club pays a setup charge plus a fixed cost for each printed hinge. Write the cost function using x for hinges and y for dollars.
