Room for the Next Repair
On Saturday, Davi opened his neighborhood repair shop in the narrow passage beside his family's apartment. His workbench was an old door balanced on sturdy supports. He fixed loose handles, stuck zippers, and squeaky hinges, leaving electrical work to adults. A sign promised SAME-DAY REPAIRS. Davi had painted those words largest because nobody knew his work yet.
By noon, the passage held a folding stool, two backpacks, and a wooden sewing box. Customers had to turn sideways to reach the bench. Davi's father reminded him that the passage had to be clear before Sunday's scheduled grocery delivery. Davi nodded and accepted another bag without checking what was inside.
The bag belonged to Mrs. Chen, who earned money altering clothes. She lifted out a small wooden organizer with a cracked carrying handle. “I need this for tomorrow's work,” she said. Davi examined the plain handle and pictured a smooth new one. “It will look better than before,” he promised, already reaching for his measuring tape.
He spent the afternoon shaping and sanding a replacement handle from scrap wood. When Mrs. Chen returned, he held up the organizer proudly. She set her tools inside, then frowned: the new handle crossed the opening, preventing her longest scissors from fitting. “I carry it open while I work,” she explained. Davi looked at the discarded handle, which had arched much higher.
Davi offered to try again immediately, but Mrs. Chen needed to leave for her evening shift. She agreed to collect the organizer early Sunday, before the delivery. Meanwhile, two other customers arrived for items Davi had not finished. Their waiting feet blocked the passage while he searched beneath the bench. For the first time, his bright sign looked less like an invitation than a list of debts.
Davi wanted to hide the sign, but instead he brought out a pencil and paper. He wrote each customer's name, the repair requested, and a pickup time they both agreed on. He asked Mrs. Chen to demonstrate how she carried the organizer before she left. That evening, he made a higher handle, then finished the two waiting repairs instead of accepting new ones.
By the time the delivery arrived, every repaired item had been collected. Davi hung his sign again, with SAME-DAY painted over. Under REPAIRS, he added QUESTIONS FIRST. A neighbor stopped with a wobbly footrest and asked whether he could leave it. Davi reached for his notebook before reaching for the footrest.
