Delia had already posted a teaser for the student podcast: “One question. One story you’ve never heard.” Their scheduled guest, a district speech finalist, had canceled. Delia stared at the empty chair across from her microphone. The episode was due Friday, and she had promised listeners something memorable. Beside her, sound editor Idris wound a cable around his elbow.

Joelle, an eighth grader who worked in the school office during study hall, arrived with the recording-room key they had forgotten to return. Delia asked whether she had ten minutes. Joelle glanced at the empty chair, then sat. Asked about a time something had gone wrong, she described freezing during a music audition. Delia leaned closer as Joelle explained how she had returned the next week to try again.

“I can tell you what helped,” Joelle said, “but please don’t use the part about freezing. I haven’t told my friends.” Delia’s pencil stopped above her notes. That was the moment she had already imagined opening the episode with. She suggested leaving out the instrument and the date. Joelle folded her hands. “People could still recognize it. Could we just talk about trying again?”

After Joelle left for class, Delia dragged the audition clip to the beginning of the recording. The room’s clock ticked above the door. Idris placed the headphones beside the keyboard. “She said that part wasn’t for the episode.” Delia replayed Joelle’s request, then removed the clip even though it was the strongest opening she had recorded. She opened the teaser and replaced its promise with a question: “What helps you begin again?”

Delia emailed Joelle the shorter recording and asked whether it said what she wanted it to say. Joelle requested another cut: a sentence that made returning sound easy. They recorded a replacement the next afternoon. This time Delia asked which parts of the experience Joelle was comfortable sharing before switching on the microphone.

The finished episode contained advice about practicing with one trusted person and choosing a small first step. It did not explain the audition. Delia worried that listeners would find the conversation incomplete. Then Joelle listened to the final version and said, “That sounds like what I meant.” Delia saved the file without adding the missing scene.

On Friday, Delia printed a new interview sheet. Above the space for her first question, she added a line asking guests what should remain off the recording. The original teaser was still in her drafts folder. She left it there and sent Joelle the link to the published episode.
