Neighbors Put Their Block on the Wall
The blank wall beside the Juniper Community Center is becoming a mural shaped by neighborhood memories. For several weeks, residents have brought sketches and photographs to planning sessions. The design includes a corner grocery, apartment windows, and hands passing a serving bowl. Project coordinator Renata Velez calls the wall a shared record, not a complete history of the neighborhood. There is not enough space available on the wall to include every suggestion.
At the first session, residents attached drawings to a display board. Folding chairs stood in rows beneath the windows. After wheelchair users reported that the proposed viewing area was too narrow, the organizers widened it. The revised plan was posted beside the entrance. Volunteers collected the drawing supplies at the end of the evening.
Teen volunteers helped turn the selected drawings into a single design. At first, several people worked on separate versions of the same windows. In order to avoid repeating the same work again, student organizer Darnell Cho created a task chart. Each section now has a named team and a written list of supplies. The chart identifies who sketches, who mixes colors, and who checks the edges before painting begins.
Before painting, volunteers removed loose dirt with stiff brushes. They tested blue and green paint samples on small boards rather than directly on the wall. From across the street, the lighter blue was difficult to distinguish from the white background. The team selected a darker blue for the lettering. That choice made the words easier to read; it did not settle every question about the design.
Work will continue on Saturday mornings until the mural is finished. The center director has approved the use of the wall, but the final lettering still needs review. Names will appear only after the people named give permission. Volunteers hope to hold a public gathering when the painting is complete. For now, the newsletter can report progress without announcing an opening date that the team has not confirmed.
