About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students use before-and-after survey data to argue how a change in sunlight affected meadow populations.
- Students use a comparison area to rule out another explanation for a change in an ecosystem.
How to use
Read the passage and table together and ask students what the east half is for before they start; let them answer the argument question last.
Curriculum
NGSS standard covered
Argue from evidence that changes to physical or living parts of an ecosystem affect its populations.

In the Shadow of the New Wing: Arguing About a School Meadow
Compare a shaded half and a sunny half to argue how one physical change affected populations.
Two halves of one meadow
Read the passage and Table 1, then answer the questions.
The Meadow Behind Thornbury Middle School
1Since 2019, the garden club at Thornbury Middle School has cared for a native meadow beside the school greenhouse. The meadow is a strip of wildflowers and grasses that a gravel path splits into a west half and an east half, each about 200 m². In 2024, the school built a two-story gym wing just south of the west half. At this school's location, the midday Sun is in the southern part of the sky, so the new wall now stands between the Sun and the west half for much of the day. Nothing was built near the east half.
2Club president Tavita Seumalo wanted to know whether the new wing had changed the meadow's populations. With their adviser, Ms. Rosalind Iwuchukwu, the club compared surveys from June 2023, before construction began, with surveys from June 2025, a year after the wing was finished. Both years, the club used the same methods in both halves. A light logger recorded the hours of direct sunlight on an average day. A thermometer measured the soil temperature 5 cm down at noon. Members counted flowering stems in five 1 m² squares and reported the average, counted bee visits to the flowers during six 10-minute watches and reported the average, and checked under five wooden boards early in the morning to count slugs. They also estimated what percent of the ground was covered by moss.
3The club's field guide gave some background. Most of the meadow's wildflowers, such as purple coneflower and black-eyed Susan, grow and bloom best in full sun. Many bees and butterflies feed on the nectar of these flowers, and bees also carry pollen back to feed their young. Slugs usually hide during the day in cool, damp spots and come out at night to eat soft leaves and young seedlings. Mosses are small plants that often spread over damp, shady ground where taller plants are thin.
4There was one more difference between the two years. The school's rain gauge recorded 60 mm of rain in June 2023 and 95 mm in June 2025, so June 2025 was the wetter month for the whole meadow.
