About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify equal quantities with opposite signs that combine to make zero.
  • Students determine changes that undo aquarium care and feeding-schedule adjustments.
  • Students explain the difference between zero net change and a final quantity of zero.

How to use

Use after introducing signed quantities. Have students label the direction of each change, then discuss why zero net change does not mean an empty tank or container.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

7.NS.A.1.a

Describe situations where opposite quantities combine to make 0, like gaining and then losing the same amount.

Aquarium Logs: Changes That Cancel

Use opposite quantities to identify changes that combine to make zero.

Identify Opposite Changes

A net change is the combined effect of the changes. Opposite quantities have equal sizes and opposite signs.

1.
During tank maintenance, adding water is positive and removing water is negative. Which pair produces zero net change in water volume?
  • A. Remove 7 liters, then add 7 liters.
  • B. Remove 7 liters, then add 5 liters.
  • C. Add 7 liters, then add 7 liters.
  • D. Remove 7 liters, then add 14 liters.
2.
A feeding time is moved 18 minutes later. Later changes are positive; earlier changes are negative. A second change returns the feeding to its original time.

Write the signed second change:   minutes

3.
Select all pairs of changes that combine to make zero. Within each pair, both changes measure the same quantity.
