Before the Bus Leaves

1[The visitor room of a weather station. Students gather after a field trip. Dalia pats her jacket pockets while Ren folds a station map. Their teacher, Ms. Bellamy, checks the class list.]
DALIA: My phone is gone. My brother expects a message when we leave.
MS. BELLAMY: The bus leaves in ten minutes. We have time to retrace your steps.

2REN: I'll call it.
DALIA: It won't ring. I silenced it before the tour.
[Ren takes a small blue rectangle from the table and slips it into his jacket.]
DALIA: My phone case is blue.
[She looks at Ren's pocket, then turns toward the windows.]

3MS. BELLAMY: Where do you remember using it?
DALIA: At the wind instruments outside. Then I came in and opened my lunch.
REN: Let's check the bench by the instrument display.
DALIA: You can stay here.
[Ren unfolds the map again but does not sit down.]

4[Ms. Bellamy returns from the doorway with a visitor log.]
MS. BELLAMY: The guide checked outside. Nothing there. Dalia, tell me what happened after lunch.
DALIA: Ren asked to see my pictures.
REN: You showed me the spinning cups on the wind instrument. Then you needed both hands to zip your lunch bag.

5DALIA: What did you put in your pocket?
[Ren pulls out a blue visitor badge with his name on it.]
REN: This. The clip broke.
[Dalia reaches toward the badge, then lets her hand fall.]
DALIA: Oh.
[Ren places the badge on the table without speaking.]

6MS. BELLAMY: Let's separate what we noticed from what we guessed. What happened when you zipped the bag?
DALIA: I put the phone on the bench. Beside the maps.
[Ren lifts a folded map from the bench, revealing the phone beneath it.]
REN: Found it.

7[Dalia takes the phone but keeps facing Ren.]
DALIA: I saw something blue and decided I knew what it was. I should have asked instead of treating you like you'd done something.
REN: You could have asked.
[He picks up his badge and hands Dalia the map.]

8DALIA: Want to choose a picture for the class report?
[Ren pauses, then moves beside her to look at the screen.]
REN: The spinning cups. That one's clear.
MS. BELLAMY: Bring the map, too. We can label what the instrument measures on the ride back.
