Notice the difference between what Della says and what her actions suggest.

The Scratched Silver Bell

1Della discovered the bicycle behind folded chairs in her aunt's storage room. Its blue frame wore a coat of dust, its tires sagged, and a silver bell leaned sideways on the handlebar. Aunt Ren offered it to her. Della pictured arriving at school on a bicycle she had restored herself, with every surface shining.

2At Saturday's neighborhood repair workshop, Della spread a towel beneath the bicycle. She set her phone beside the tools, ready to photograph each stage. When the volunteer, Celia, offered to inspect it, Della said, “I'll call you when it's finished.” She turned the bicycle so its rustiest side faced the wall before taking her first photograph.

3Cleaning revealed blue paint beneath the gray film. It also revealed a long scrape across the bell. Della put a replacement bell on her shopping list. Aunt Ren, who had come to help carry supplies, touched the scrape. “My schoolbag buckle did that. I used to hang the bag here.” She pointed beneath the handlebar, then left Della to work.

4By noon, Della had cleaned the frame, but one brake lever still felt loose. She squeezed it again, then glanced at Celia, who was helping another visitor. Della opened her camera, closed it, and carried the bicycle across the room. “Can you show me what to check?” she asked. Celia inspected both brakes with her and explained which worn parts needed replacing.

5While Celia fetched the parts, Della returned to her list. She crossed out “new bell” and carefully cleaned around the scrape. Then she held the bell steady while Aunt Ren tightened its clamp. The bell rang clearly. Della recorded the sound and sent it to her aunt, even though Aunt Ren was standing beside her.

6The bicycle stayed at the workshop until the following Saturday, when Celia could finish the repairs and check it for safe riding. Della's cousin suggested taking it home early for a photograph outside. “It looks ready,” he said. Della shook her head and helped Celia label the parts they had ordered.

7After the final inspection, Della photographed the bicycle beside the workshop door. She moved closer to include the scraped bell, not hide it. Under the picture she wrote, “Restored by Della, with brake repairs and guidance from Celia. Bell stories supplied by Aunt Ren.” Then she put on her helmet and wheeled the bicycle outside.
