About this worksheet
What students practice
- Students graph the amounts of salt water and fresh water on Earth.
- Students compare scaled models to judge whether they show Earth's water distribution accurately.
- Students use numerical evidence to explain what a water-distribution graph shows.
How to use
Read the field team's notes together, then have students graph the reference model before judging the proposed scoreboard designs.
Curriculum
NGSS standard covered

The Storm-Damaged Scoreboard Water Model
Judge a field display by graphing Earth's water distribution.
Read the field team's notes
After a storm, the scoreboard near a sports field was damaged. The field team wants to replace it with a science display. Read the numbered notes and use the data to answer the questions.
Notes from the storm-field team
1The team is making a model of all the water on Earth. Their reference estimate divides the whole amount into 100 equal units. About 97.5 units are salt water, and about 2.5 units are fresh water. These amounts include water in all places on Earth, not just water found near the sports field.
2The team wants to use whole counters, so it tests a model with 200 equal counters. In that model, 195 counters stand for salt water and 5 counters stand for fresh water. The team tests three scoreboard layouts. The blue layout uses 195 salt-water counters and 5 fresh-water counters. The orange layout uses 190 salt-water counters and 10 fresh-water counters. The green layout uses 98 salt-water counters and 2 fresh-water counters.
3A fair bar graph for the display should use one shared amount scale for both bars. It should name the two kinds of water, show the units being counted, and make the bars start at zero. The team will choose a layout that keeps the numerical comparison clear.
- A. 95 salt-water units and 5 fresh-water units
- B. 97 salt-water units and 3 fresh-water units
- C. 97.5 salt-water units and 2.5 fresh-water units
- D. 99 salt-water units and 1 fresh-water unit
In the 200-counter model, how many more counters stand for salt water than fresh water? counters
