The Hole in Linden Street: Three Accounts
Compare three points of view on the same event.
Read the three accounts
All three texts are about the same sinkhole on Linden Street.
Text 1: An Update from the City Water Department
1On Monday morning, a sinkhole about the size of a car opened on Linden Street. No one was hurt. Our crew found that an old water pipe under the road had been leaking for a long time. The leaking water slowly washed away the soil beneath the street until the road surface caved in.
2Safety is our first concern. We have put up fences around the hole, and Linden Street will stay closed to cars while we replace the pipe and refill the ground. We expect the work to take about three weeks. Please stay behind the fences and use Elm Street instead. We are also checking other old pipes in the area so this does not happen again. — Engineer Halima Brandt
Text 2: A Letter to the Town Newspaper
1To the editor: For twenty years, my shoe repair shop on Linden Street has been busy every day. Since the sinkhole opened, the street has been closed, and my customers cannot park near my door. This week I fixed only a handful of shoes. Three weeks is a long time for a small shop to wait.
2I am thankful that no one was hurt, and the repair crews are working hard. However, people have known for years that the pipes under Linden Street were old. I hope the city will fix old pipes before they break, not after. Until the street opens, please walk over from Elm Street and visit the shops on our block. — Desmond Achterberg, owner of Achterberg Shoe Repair
Text 3: From the Journal of Ximena, Grade 5
1Monday: On my way to school, I saw orange fences and a giant hole in the middle of Linden Street. It looked deep enough for a car to fit inside! At first my stomach felt jumpy, because I walk on that street every day. Mom explained that the sidewalks away from the fences are safe.
2Thursday: After school, I watched the crew lower a long new pipe into the hole with a crane. One worker told me that the old pipe had a leak, and leaking water can carry dirt away little by little, like waves pulling sand off a beach. Now I want to learn more about what is under our streets. I also noticed that the shoe repair shop was empty, so I asked Dad to bring his boots there on Saturday.
