Cast of characters: KENJI, host of the school's morning radio show; ABENA, the show's producer; MR. CASTILLO, the school custodian; three fourth graders in the Bucket Band
Scene 1: Monday Morning, the Radio Room
(The school's radio room is no bigger than a closet. Two microphones sit on a desk covered in sticky notes. MR. CASTILLO kneels by the radiator, tapping a pipe with his wrench in a quick, bouncing rhythm. KENJI hangs up the phone and slumps into his chair.)
KENJI: That was Mrs. Delgado. She has the flu, so she can't come on Friday.
ABENA: But she's our special guest! We've been telling the whole school about her storytelling for two weeks.
KENJI: The Friday show is supposed to be our best one of the year. We need someone special, someone nobody has ever heard before.
ABENA: (flipping through her clipboard) We have four days. We'll find somebody.
(MR. CASTILLO ends his rhythm with two sharp taps, gathers his tools, and slips out the door. Neither KENJI nor ABENA looks up.)
Scene 2: Wednesday Afternoon, the Hallway
(The hallway is empty after school. ABENA and KENJI walk slowly. ABENA crosses names off a list.)
ABENA: The principal is busy. The chorus is on a field trip. The science teacher said, "Maybe next year."
KENJI: Then let's just play old recordings on Friday. Nobody will notice.
ABENA: Everyone will notice! (She stops.) Wait. Do you hear that?
(From around the corner comes a booming, clattering beat. MR. CASTILLO is drumming on three upside-down buckets with two mop handles.)
KENJI: (whispering) That's the rhythm he was tapping on Monday!
ABENA: Mr. Castillo, would you be our guest on Friday's show?
MR. CASTILLO: (lowering the mops) Me? On the radio? I haven't played for an audience in thirty years.
KENJI: Please. You're exactly what we've been looking for.
MR. CASTILLO: (after a long pause) All right. But only if some students drum with me.
