One Thin Layer at a Time
Every evening that January, Nadia Haddad stayed at the park rink until the streetlights flickered on. The winter skating show was three weeks away, and she had promised her coach a sit spin, the move where a skater crouches low on one leg and whirls like a top. So far, the only thing Nadia could do low and fast was fall.
On Thursday she toppled for the ninth time and stayed down, glaring at the scratched ice. "This spin is hopeless," she muttered. "I should just ask Coach Rivera to cut it from the show."
Across the rink, Mr. Bakshi was unrolling a long green hose. He had driven a city bus for thirty years, and now, every winter, he built the neighborhood rink himself. Nadia watched him twist the nozzle until the water came out as a fine, hissing mist. He swept it back and forth over the ice, slowly and evenly, as if he were painting a fence.
"Why don't you just fill the whole rink at once?" Nadia called. "Wouldn't that be faster?"
Mr. Bakshi chuckled. "Faster tonight, slower all winter," he said. "Deep water freezes on top first, and the water under that crust stays soft. The first skater who comes along cracks right through. Thin layers freeze hard and smooth. So I add one thin coat every night, and the ice grows a little each time." He nodded at the shining surface. "A good rink isn't poured, Nadia. It's built."
Nadia walked home slowly, turning his words over in her mind. She had been trying to do the whole spin at once, crouching and balancing and whirling in one breathless rush. Maybe a spin had to be built, too.
The next afternoon, she didn't try the spin even once. Instead, she glided across the rink on her left foot with her arms out, counting to ten. The day after that, she practiced sinking lower on that one foot, inch by inch, while she held on to the boards. Only after a week did she add the turn, and at first she managed just one wobbly circle before she popped back up. Each evening, as she left, she heard the soft hiss of Mr. Bakshi's hose behind her.
On the night of the show, Nadia's stomach fluttered as the music began. She dropped into her crouch and spun once, twice, three times before her free foot brushed the ice and she rose. It was not perfect. But when she looked up, she spotted Mr. Bakshi by the boards, clapping in his big wool mittens, and she grinned so widely that her cheeks ached. Tomorrow, she decided, she would add one more turn.
