Animal Shelter Helpers: Taking a Fraction of an Amount

Split an amount into equal parts, then take some of the parts.

A fraction of a whole number

Split the amount into equal parts. Then take the parts you need.

1.
The shelter has 30 cans of cat food. One-fifth of the cans are tuna, and the rest are chicken.

Split the 30 cans into 5 equal parts: 1/5 × 30 =   cans of tuna
The chicken cans are the other 4 parts: 4/5 × 30 =   cans of chicken

2.
Omar has 24 dog treats. He gives 5/8 of them to the puppies.

Split the 24 treats into 8 equal groups. Each group has   treats.
Omar gives away 5 groups: 5/8 × 24 =   treats

3.
The shelter has 6 bags of dog food. The dogs eat 3/4 of the food this week. Find 3/4 × 6 by multiplying 3 × 6 first and then dividing by 4.

3 × 6 =
18 ÷ 4 =   bags of dog food
