About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students find the area of a rectangle with fraction side lengths by counting unit fraction tiles.
  • Students multiply fraction side lengths and show the product matches the tiled area.
  • Students represent fraction products as rectangles and solve quilt area problems.

How to use

Model Part 1 with a paper square folded into equal tiles. Students can then work through Parts 2 and 3 on their own and explain their tile reasoning in the last two problems.

Quilt Patch Fraction Areas

Tile and multiply to find areas with fraction side lengths.

Part 1: Tile the quilt block

Each big square is a quilt block that is 1 foot on each side, so its area is 1 square foot. The block is split into equal tiles.

1.
Aiden sews a dark patch onto his quilt block.115/6 ft3/4 ft

Tiles in the whole block:
Tiles in the patch:
Area of one tile:   square foot
Area of the patch:   square foot

2.
Use Aiden's patch to see why multiplying the side lengths works.

The patch is 5 tiles across and 3 tiles down: 5 × 3 =   tiles
The block is 6 tiles across and 4 tiles down: 6 × 4 =   tiles
So 5/6 × 3/4 =   square foot

3.
Each picture is a 1-foot quilt block. Match each dark patch to the multiplication that gives its area. One multiplication will not be used.
