Story A: The Tape Line

When Noor's mom married June's dad, Noor got a stepsister, a new name on the mailbox and half a bedroom. On the first night, Noor stuck a strip of blue tape down the middle of the floor.

"Your side, my side," she said. June shrugged and set her suitcase on the bed by the window. That bed used to be Noor's.

For a week, the girls barely spoke. June strummed her guitar on her side. Noor read on hers. At dinner, the grown-ups chatted brightly, and the girls stared at their plates.

Then one night, Noor heard a small sniff from the other side of the tape. June was holding a photo of her old house.

Noor thought about her own first night in this apartment, years ago, when everything smelled like paint and nothing felt like hers. She crossed the tape line and sat on the edge of June's bed.

"It took me a whole year to like it here," Noor said. "The radiator clanks all night. You get used to it."

June laughed a little. "Can you show me where the good snacks are hidden?"

The next morning, the blue tape was in the trash.
