About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students decide whether a dashed line is a line of symmetry by imagining a fold.
  • Students count the lines of symmetry in polygons and other flat shapes.
  • Students draw every line of symmetry on a rectangle and on a plus-sign shape.

How to use

Before starting, let students fold a paper rectangle in half three ways: across, down, and corner to corner. In Part 1 they can fold paper copies of the signs to check their answers.

Symmetry at the Sign Shop

Fold, count, and draw lines of symmetry on shop signs.

The fold test

A line of symmetry splits a shape into two halves that match exactly. If you fold the shape on the line, one half fits right on top of the other.

1.
The sign makers drew a dashed line on each sign. Sort the signs.
Line of symmetryNot a line of symmetry
2.
Ana draws a dashed line from one corner of this rectangle sign to the opposite corner. Why is the dashed line not a line of symmetry?
  • A. The two halves are different sizes.
  • B. The line does not go through the middle of the sign.
  • C. When you fold on the line, the corners of the two halves do not land on each other.
  • D. A rectangle has no lines of symmetry at all.
3.
Look at the dashed line on the heart sign.
