About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students decide whether a dashed line is a line of symmetry by imagining folding the shape along it.
  • Students count and compare the lines of symmetry of shapes, including turned shapes and regular polygons.
  • Students draw every line of symmetry on a rhombus and a cross.

How to use

Let students trace and fold paper copies of a few shapes before Part 1. Mirrors or tracing paper help students check their lines in Parts 2 and 3.

Sand Mold Symmetry at the Beach

Find, count, and draw lines of symmetry in sand shapes.

Part 1: The fold test

A line of symmetry splits a shape into two halves that match exactly when you fold the shape along the line. Cutting a shape into two pieces of the same size is not enough: the halves must land right on top of each other.

1.
Each sand shape has a dashed line drawn through it. Circle every shape where the dashed line is a line of symmetry.

2.
Kai drew the square sand mold on paper. The dashed lines are all of its lines of symmetry. Kai will fold the drawing along one line.
Word bank: triangle · rectangle · square · trapezoid

If Kai folds along a line that goes from one corner to the opposite corner, each half is a  .
If Kai folds along a line that goes through the middles of two opposite sides, each half is a  .

3.
Zara presses three molds into the sand: a square, a triangle with 3 equal sides, and a heart.squaretriangleheart

How many lines of symmetry does the square have?
How many lines of symmetry does the triangle have?
How many lines of symmetry does the heart have?
Zara draws every line of symmetry on all three shapes. How many lines does she draw in all?
