About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students decide whether a fold line on a flag design is a line of symmetry.
  • Students count the lines of symmetry of flat shapes, including shapes that are turned.
  • Students complete a figure on a grid so that a given line is a line of symmetry.

How to use

Use after introducing lines of symmetry. Let students fold a paper rectangle down the middle and across the middle before they start the flag questions.

Symmetry on Field Day Flags

Test team flags and badges for lines of symmetry.

Team flags

Each field day team made a flag on grid paper. A line of symmetry folds a flag into two halves where the shapes and the colors match exactly. Test a fold straight down the middle and a fold straight across the middle of each flag.

1.
The Hawks' flag has a dark stripe across the top.

Fold straight down the middle. Do the two halves match?
Fold straight across the middle. Do the two halves match?
Number of lines of symmetry:

2.
Which flag has a line of symmetry straight across the middle, but not straight down the middle?
  • A. Owls
  • B. Hawks
  • C. Jets
  • D. Bears
3.
The Comets' flag is dark gray on the left half and light gray on the right half.Gia says the line straight down the middle is a line of symmetry because the two halves are the same size. Is she right?
  • A. Yes. The two halves are rectangles of the same size.
  • B. Yes. Every flag shaped like a rectangle has a line of symmetry straight down the middle.
  • C. No. The two halves are the same shape, but their colors do not match.
  • D. No. A line of symmetry can never go straight down the middle of a flag.
