Let's Start a Walking Club

Recess is my favorite part of the school day, but not everyone knows what to do with it. I think our school should start a walking club at recess. A walking club would help students stay active and make new friends, and it would be easy to start. Here are my three reasons.

My first reason is that walking is good exercise. When you walk, your heart beats faster and your muscles work harder. Exercise like this helps keep your body strong. Our school already has a dirt path that circles the soccer field. It takes about five minutes to walk around it once, so a student who walks the path three times gets about fifteen minutes of exercise.

My second reason is that a walking club would help students make friends. In a quick survey of my class, nine of the twenty-four students said they sometimes stand alone at recess because they do not know who to play with. Walking is a good way to meet someone new, because you can talk side by side as you go. A student who just moved to our school could join the club on the very first day.

My third reason is that a walking club is easy to start. Soccer needs a ball, and jump rope needs a rope, but walking needs no equipment at all. The club would need only one adult to watch the path, and my teacher, Mr. Ortega, said he would be happy to do it. Students could join on any day they like.

A walking club would give students exercise, friendship, and an easy way to enjoy recess. I hope our principal will let us start next month.
