Why We Should Visit the Nature Center

Our class should take a field trip to the town nature center. The center has walking trails, a quiet pond, and live animals that visitors can watch. We have been reading about animals and their habitats this month, and I believe a visit would be the best way to finish our unit. Some of the trails are short enough for a class of fourth graders to walk in one morning. I have two reasons for my opinion.

First, a field trip would help us learn things that a book cannot show us. For instance, we could watch a turtle swim in a real pond instead of looking at a picture of one. We could also touch a pinecone, a feather, and a smooth river rock. The pictures in our science book are helpful, but they cannot show how an animal moves. When we see and touch real things, new facts are easier to remember.

In addition, a field trip would bring our class closer together. In order to finish the scavenger hunt at the center, each team would have to share the jobs. One student could read the clues while another writes down the answers. Each team would walk with a parent helper, and every group would stay safe on the trails. As a result, we would practice teamwork while we have fun.

For these reasons, our class should visit the nature center. A trip there would teach us about nature and help us work as a team. A day outside would make our unit on habitats come alive. I hope our teacher will say yes.
