The Great Remote Hunt
Characters: AMIRA, age 10; ZAIN, her brother, age 6; DAD; GRANDPA
Setting: Friday night in the family's living room. A saggy brown couch sits in front of the TV.
AMIRA: (dragging in a pile of blankets) Movie night! I'm going to build the coziest nest on this couch.
ZAIN: (bouncing on the cushions) Boing! Boing! Look how high I can go!
DAD: Zain, please sit down. That couch is as old as the hills. It was in my room when I was your age.
GRANDPA: (sinking slowly into the cushions) Ahh. This cushion is a cloud. I may never get up again.
AMIRA: Don't fall asleep before the movie starts, Grandpa. Last Friday you snored like a tractor, and nobody could hear a word.
GRANDPA: I was only resting my eyes.
DAD: (carrying in a huge bowl) The popcorn is ready!
ZAIN: Whoa! That bowl is a mountain of popcorn! (He grabs two big handfuls and stuffs them into his mouth.)
DAD: Slow down, Zain. You eat like a hungry bear. Save some for the rest of us.
AMIRA: Okay, is everybody ready? Wait. Where is the remote?
(Everyone searches. Pillows fly. Dad looks under the couch. Zain peeks into the popcorn bowl.)
DAD: That remote is a magician. It does a disappearing act every Friday night.
GRANDPA: (wiggling, then pulling the remote out from under his leg) Found it! It was hiding under me like a mouse in a hole.
(Dad turns off the lamp, and the movie begins.)
ZAIN: (whispering) It's as dark as a cave in here.
(A huge alien roars on the screen. Zain dives behind a big pillow.)
ZAIN: I'm not scared. This pillow is my shield. Nothing can get me back here.
AMIRA: (lifting the edge of her blanket) Come into my nest, Zain. It's the safest spot on the couch.
(Halfway through the movie, a low rumble fills the room.)
AMIRA: (whispering and pointing) Listen. There's the tractor again.
DAD: (laughing quietly) The movie isn't over yet, but Grandpa's movie night is!
