About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify cause-and-effect questions about electric and magnetic forces across a gap.
  • Students use journal data to distinguish answered questions from questions needing new tests.
  • Students plan fair tests and write questions about forces between objects that are not touching.

How to use

Read the field journal together, then have students use the graphs and notes to judge which questions the tests answer. Ask students to explain their final claims with data.

No-Touch Forces at the Wind Center

Use a field journal to ask questions about electric and magnetic forces.

Read the field journal

Read Lila's notes from the wind farm visitor center. Use the graphs and notes to answer the questions.

Lila's Wind Farm Journal

Lila visited a wind farm visitor center for three days. In one activity, she rubbed a plastic strip with wool and held it near tiny tissue squares. She recorded whether a tissue square moved before the strip touched it. She changed the starting gap but kept the strip, wool, and tissue squares the same.

On Day 1, Lila tested six trials at each gap. At a 1-centimeter gap, tissue moved before contact in 5 trials. At a 3-centimeter gap, it moved in 3 trials. At a 5-centimeter gap, it moved in 1 trial. With an unrubbed strip at a 1-centimeter gap, tissue moved in 0 of 6 trials.

On Day 2, Lila held a bar magnet near a steel washer without touching it. At a 1-centimeter gap, the washer moved before contact in 6 of 6 trials. At a 4-centimeter gap, it moved in 2 of 6 trials. She used the same magnet, washer, and test surface.

On Day 3, Lila wrote questions for future tests. She wanted each question to name one thing to change and one effect to observe or measure.
